As we look ahead to the New Year, and all of its promise and opportunity, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the year behind us. We opened the doors of Douglas McDaniel Campo & Schools in 2013, and knew it would take hard work and dedication to our clients to be successful. In 2015, we reached a benchmark that every new firm hopes to accomplish – hiring on a new attorney – as we brought Maine Law graduate Kristen R. Dorion onto our team.

In 2015, we were able to continue to get to know and support our greater Westbrook Community – including Westbrook Little League, the Westbrook High School Booster Club, The Drouin Dance Center, the Gorham High School Project Graduation and the Gorham Business Exchange. We were able to continue to support The Maine Humanities Council, Lawyers in Libraries, My Place Teen Center, the Legal Services Food Hub and Maine State Ballet.

We had a busy and fulfilling year representing our clients in transactions, settlements, and in the courtroom.

Highlights for the year include:

  • Profenno vs. Petco and Fish Mart, Inc.: Personal injury attorney Tom Douglas successfully secured damages and compensation for his client, who fell ill after being bitten by a pet rat purchased from Petco in South Portland.
  • Protection of Baker Mountain: DMCS is proud to have represented the Appalachian Mountain Club through this complicated land purchase and conservation transaction in Piscataquis County. Scenic land on and around Baker Mountain in the 100-Mile Wilderness are now permanently protected following purchases by AMC in late January, with assistance from The Nature Conservancy.
  • Brown vs. Delta Tau Delta: Our attorneys successfully argued that a fraternity house where our client was sexually assaulted could be held responsible for the sexual misconduct of its members during fraternity-sponsored events.
  • Immigration Courts: After a four-year process, immigration attorney Anne E. Schools secured asylum for two political refugees from war-torn countries in Africa. DMCS is proud to represent people legally seeking to emigrate to the United States.
  • Estate law: Won a trial that successfully defended a personal representative from allegations of misappropriation of estate property and breach of duties of personal representative.
  • Provided a fresh start to numerous individuals by representing individual debtors in bankruptcy cases and completing each case with a discharge of their debts.
  • Taught a Landlord/Tenant Law Seminar sponsored by the National Business Institute.  The Seminar educated property managers, lawyers, and landlords about the fundamentals of Landlord Tenant Law along with changes in the law.

We value every chance we have to represent our clients. In addition to our 2015 “highlights,” we have represented dozens of clients with diverse needs, from reaching amicable divorce settlements, defending OUI charges, arguing before the Maine Supreme Court, and assisting clients reach financial solvency in Bankruptcy Court. With the addition of Attorney Dorion, we will expand our criminal law practice in 2016 and also look forward to offering mediation services.

We look forward to 2016 and continuing to represent individual and business clients throughout the state. At the heart of each case are the people who we hope to help. We wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.
